Regarding North American certification
When it comes to entering the North American market, most customers require UL certification. Some customers really require UL certification from American insurance companies, while more customers are referring to product certification in North America.
In fact, UL certification is a type of North American certification. North American certification includes CSA and ETL certification for medium voltage switchgear, both of which have the same qualifications as UL. They test switchgear that meets North American standards according to standards and issue product certification certificates that meet US and/or Canadian standards.
Switchgear belongs to the "Listed" product category:
(1) Published by a nationally recognized laboratory that conducts regular inspections of the production of such equipment, and
(2) This type of equipment complies with nationally recognized standards or has been tested and found to be safe to use in specific ways in countries.
National Recognized Testing Laboratory is an abbreviation for Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory in English. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under the US Department of Labor requires that products used in the workplace must be tested and certified by a nationally recognized laboratory to ensure the personal safety of users.
OSHA legislation stipulates management requirements that equipment should be listed or labeled by nationally recognized testing laboratories (commonly known as NRTLs).
OSHA has established a program to identify NRTLs. OSHAOSHA also stipulates that the basic basis for labeling or listing is compliance with the National Electrical Code (NFPA70). OSHA website( https://www.osha.gov/dts/otpca/nrtl/ )NRTL is a private sector organization recognized by OSHA, responsible for conducting certification of electrical products.
OSHA also limits the scope of activities that any individual NRTL can engage in based on their specific abilities. If the certification of the product is completed under the NRTL program, the certification mark (label or checklist) indicates that NRTL has tested and certified the product and that the product meets the requirements of one or more appropriate product safety testing standards. Users of the product can typically rely on this mark as evidence that the product complies with applicable OSHA approval requirements and can be safely used in the workplace.
Medium voltage switchgear and medium voltage controller products typically comply with
Several requirements of IEEE and UL standards,
include:
IEEE C37.20.2 Metal Armored Switchgear
IEEE C37.20.3 Metal Enclosed Circuit Breaker Switchgear
IEEE C37.20.4 Indoor use of metal enclosed switchgear
AC switch (1kV-38kV) IEEE C37.20.9 gas insulated switchgear UL347 medium voltage AC contactor, controller and control center.
The OSHA nationally accredited testing laboratory program lists a total of 15 NRTLs, but some of them are NRTLs recognized by OSHA to provide certification for medium voltage switchgear.
The recognized NRTLs for medium voltage switches by OSHA mainly include:
Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL)
