Why are current and voltage transformers sometimes called CT, PT, and sometimes TV, TA?
Have you noticed that sometimes we call current and voltage transformers CT and PT, and sometimes people call them TV and TA? Why is that?
1. Voltage Transformer (PT/TV)
PT: is an abbreviation for "Potential Transformer", emphasizing its function of proportionally transforming high voltage into low voltage, commonly used in voltage measurement, metering, and relay protection.
TV: is an abbreviation for "Transformer for Voltage", which has a similar meaning to PT. In standards and industry specifications, TV is more commonly used to represent the property of voltage transformers.
2. Current Transformer (CT/TA)
CT: is an abbreviation for "Current Transformer", used to transform large currents into small currents for easy current measurement and relay protection.
TA: is an abbreviation for "Transformer for Ampere", which is more commonly used in standards and industry specifications to represent the device attribute of current transformers.
3. Differences in Industry Habits and Standards
Different countries or regions may adopt different naming conventions. For example, CT/PT is commonly used in North America, while TA/TV may be more common in some European countries.
In the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards, the expression of CT/PT focuses more on functional description ("transformers used for current/voltage"), while TA/TV directly reflects the type of equipment.
