North American solid insulated ring main unit
A switchgear system capable of operating at voltages up to 27 kV includes an enclosure containing atmosphere and a load circuit breaker module located within the enclosure. The load switch module includes a load circuit breaker module housing made of solid dielectric material, a vacuum circuit breaker enclosed within the load circuit breaker module housing and having fixed and movable contacts, and an interchange device electrically connected to the movable contacts. The vacuum interrupter is operable to selectively disconnect or establish electrical pathways between the exchange device and terminals in response to the movement of movable contacts relative to fixed contacts. The switchgear system also includes a casing coupled to the housing and an isolation switch electrically connected in series between the load circuit breaker module and the casing. The isolation switch includes an isolation switch housing made of solid dielectric material.
Air insulated switchgear exposes live components to corrosion, unnecessary animal invasion, atmospheric conditions or dust pollution, and other factors that may cause premature failure of the switchgear. The solid insulated switchgear adopts a stainless steel mechanism shell, which ensures fault free performance even in high humidity, salt spray or flood environments.

The design of air insulated switchgear exposes operators to live parts when the door is opened and during switch or fuse replacement, which significantly increases the risk of exposure to arc flash. Solid insulation technology provides a truly visible fracture that can be seen within the safe proximity required for arc flash safety. The fully enclosed design in front of the cabinet can prevent operators from being exposed to arc flashes due to foreign objects coming into contact with live parts or misalignment when closing fuses to live circuits.

Manufacturers of air insulated switchgear recommend conducting a visual inspection every five years. Moreover, if the barrier or switch mechanism is not aligned and needs to be adjusted, the entire switchgear must be completely powered off and grounded. All components in solid insulated switchgear are encapsulated in epoxy resin molds and do not require maintenance, lubrication, or adjustment. During the service life of the switchgear, the resettable vacuum fault circuit breaker does not need to be replaced, and it provides five times more load breaking operations than air insulated switchgear.
