Why do transformer cores need to be grounded? And it can only be grounded at one point, not at two p
1、 Why must the iron core be grounded?
The transformer core is made of stacked silicon steel sheets and is located in a strong alternating magnetic field. There is insulation between the iron core, winding, and oil tank, which induces a floating potential during operation. If not grounded: The potential of the iron core is uncertain, and high voltage may accumulate. When the potential difference exceeds the insulation tolerance value, ground discharge (spark discharge) will occur. Repeated discharge will erode the iron core, damage the insulation, and ultimately lead to a fault. Therefore, it is necessary to reliably ground the iron core to fix the potential at ground potential (0V) and eliminate the risk of floating discharge.
2、 Why can only one point be grounded, not two or more points?
The iron core itself is a good conductor. If two or more points are grounded, a closed conductive circuit will be formed between them and the ground. The consequences are very serious: there is a strong alternating magnetic flux around the transformer, which will cut the magnetic field lines and induce a large circulating current. This will cause severe heating of the iron core, local melting and insulation aging of the silicon steel sheet, and even transformer fire and explosion. Simple understanding: two-point grounding=formation of short circuit turns=huge eddy currents=iron core burning
3、 In summary, iron core grounding: prevents floating potential from breaking through insulation and causing discharge damage. Only one grounding point can be used: to avoid the formation of a closed circuit and the generation of circulating current, and to prevent the iron core from overheating and burning out.
